What is poetry?By definition, poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative or elevated thoughts (citing dictionary.com.)
tips:I personally write at my best when I am feeling a lot of emotions. When I can't sleep, becuase I've been feeling a lot of things for about 3 days in a row, that's when I know that it's time to write. I usually do it when I'm alone, or even when my brother is in his room, since we sleep in the same room however it is parted by a curtain. Still, I can hear everything he does and many people would consider this a distraction... well, it isn't for me, thankfully. Like I said, find your comfort zone, others may write at their best when the environment is completely quiet.
You can also write at the park, where you can feel the clean air and look at the beautiful blue sky to serve as inspiration. And if you're a musician, you can bring along your guitar and sing some tunes as it will help, or just play simple chords to set a mood. Whatever you do, is because it motivates you, and only you. So do you, my friend. As long as it helps you, no one's opinion matters. You are the creator. |
what is poetry to joaraliz? In all honesty, I agree with the actual definition, but no thanks, I have my own. Poetry is not always driven through happy and "beautiful" thoughts, we know this. A person that is suicidal may write better poetry than a person who's been at it for a while. Poetry is the art and initiative to pick up a pen (or pencil, or maybe even a crayon...or maybe your touchscreen's "notes" app) to write out your feelings and thoughts. To see them for yourself is to see in a concrete sense what and who you are. To actually see your feelings written down as if they were on a life line. What you are looking at, is what is silently speaking to you out loud and saying "this is you." Poetry is the manifestation of your mind; instead of hearing yourself all the time, you are reading them instead. Isn't this amazing for a change?
This is my definition, I assure you that if you really think about it, you'll have your own in matter of seconds. That is what the pen and paper is meant for, to not only converse with your thoughts but to find some creativity within yourself as well. Now, what does poetry mean to you?Are you a newbe? In other words, new at poetry?
Here's what... write. Write, and just write. Write out your feelings, emotions, doubts, concerns, accomplishments, anything and everything that you may be feelings, or even things that you may want to feel. Poetry does not have to rhyme. Some of the best poetry does not rhyme, simply because one it might be personal and not much thought is given, or two it has something more important to pay attention to, its message behind it. Then, with a lot of practice, search the engine, get inspired. By looking through other people's writings you'll be able to find yourself, is the only way to start. If you still need help, feel free to contact me in the "Contact Me" area of the page, or just simply leave a comment as I will get back to you as soon as I can. Good Luck! |
May I present to you one of my favorites...
"Selfish Act"
"Selfish Act"
Walking through the streets of NYC, roaming each train doing nothing but circling. Looking for some love that isn't given by their siblings but most importantly searching for someone to listen. Feeling worthless with no destination, shirtless homeless with nowhere to go hopeless.. but the ambition to get somewhere acquires focus. Standing in the middle of the cart giving a speech, wanting for people to give them something they'll need or maybe some affection at least. Saying things like "my family and I are going through a hard time we don't have a home and we're on the street with no one by our side. So can you please care to even bare 2 cents" but people now in day look at them like they aren't making any sense. There aren't many people that even bother to look, when really takes two seconds, what's the excuse? Some may have hearts and bewail but others look at them as if they should beware. Some feel like they should bequeath, to help those in need those that are beneath because even so.. they're still human beings. Those that aren't nice enough are the ones to make them mentally savages, making them feel like barrens like their bandits. Despite everything these people have feelings, why is it that society forgets that they're breathing they don't know that they're insides are screaming; that they're full of hope they're always dreaming. That one day, they'll get famous cus' they ain't get tired of believin'. They beg for money everywhere they go they're so much more to just being a beggar because some of us know, they can be better. It's sad when most of them give up no type of coin in their billfold but they somehow end up in a bistro. Who are they to take the blame though, when their surroundings act like they care, na' they ain't low. See the deposition of the matter is that society is beyond blind, they only care about themselves and stick to their own minds. They can't realize that we can change someone's life at any second, anytime that these lost beings are all around us so why do we tend to hide...
Why do we not care and make it better... how dare we refer to ourselves as good people when really we're lesser...
Why do we not care and make it better... how dare we refer to ourselves as good people when really we're lesser...
